WHO WE ARE

The Setauket Harbor Task Force is a volunteer organization which works for clean water and healthy harbors.

It was founded in 2014 by local Setauket residents who love the harbor and want to protect and preserve it.

OUR ACTION AGENDA

Setauket Harbor Task Force is focused on improving water quality, encouraging public access and recreational use of the harbor, and protection of marine habitat and ecosystem resiliency.

We are dedicated to creating community awareness and support for our local harbors and bays as well as enhancing enjoyment and appreciation of our natural and cultural treasure.

  • Clean water: monitoring water quality and protecting our waters from contamination and harmful practices

  • Protecting marine life: supporting initiatives that foster marine life such as finfish, shellfish, and horseshoe crabs

  • Habitat restoration: advocating for protecting and restoring coastal marshes; planting native vegetation to stabilize marshes, shoreline, and bluffs

  • Recreational use: promoting water-related recreational activities such as boating and creating blueway paddling trails for exploring our waterways

  • Maritime cultural awareness: celebrating and promoting our area’s historical maritime roots

  • Stewardship: being a voice for the upkeep and maintenance of our public dock and parkland.

HOW WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The Setauket Harbor Task Force protects and preserves Setauket Harbor, Port Jefferson Harbor, and Conscience Bay using a variety of means including:

  • Legislative and government agency advocacy

  • Coalition building and grassroots organizing

  • Speaking out on issues that threaten the Long Island Sound and its harbors and bays

  • Promoting green infrastructure to clean up our harbors and bays

  • Promoting environmental awareness of the importance of harbors and bays and ways of improving our relationship to them
